Joni Mitchell

04/17/2020

This post is about living-legend, Joni Mitchell. First off, I think everything that could've been said about Joni Mitchell has already been said, so I won't invest too much energy trying to come up with something original. But before we transition straight to her music, I do think a modicum of words is necessary: Joni was born in the small, picturesque town of Fort Macleod, Canada. She excelled in both painting and music early on. To many people's surprise, she actually preferred painting, and even once said, "I'm a painter first, and a musician second". Even though music was her second passion, she was a damn prolific musician, producing 19 albums from 1968 to 2007 (keep in mind, ten of those were released consecutively, year-after-year during her first 10 years performing).

In this review, I attempted to listen to all her albums, but unfortunately I lost steam when I got to her 80s albums and gave up. What I learned from listening to so many of her songs, though, is that Mitchell possessed a unique way with words. Honestly, her songs didn't feel like 'songs', in the traditional and commercial sense. They felt more like long poems and stories with lots of substance.

Lastly, Mitchell's sound evolved significantly throughout the course of her long career. Her first couple albums were acoustic-heavy folk albums, but she soon dabbled in Jazz, harder rock, and more poppy sounds. In this regard, she also sets herself apart. A lot of musicians get complacent and produce the same stuff because it's safe. Not Joni!
